Anti-Reflective (AR) Coated Lens Cleaner

Anti-Reflective Coated Lens Cleaner — Safe for Every Coated Lens You Own

If you've ever wiped your AR-coated glasses with a paper towel and watched them go permanently hazy, you know the problem. Anti-reflective coatings — the thin optical layers that stop glare on prescription glasses, designer sunglasses, and camera lenses — are chemically delicate. The wrong cleaner doesn't just streak. It strips the coating, leaves milky patches, and shortens the life of a $300 pair of glasses.

Z Clear's lens cleaner is built specifically for AR-coated lenses. Every Z Clear formula — sprays, paste, and wipes — is alcohol-free, ammonia-free, and safe for the most common AR coating brands: Crizal, EnduraVision, Optifog, ZEISS DuraVision, Nikon SeeCoat, Hoya HiVision, Essilor Crizal Sapphire HR, and others.

Why Most Lens Cleaners Damage AR Coatings

Most drugstore "all-purpose" lens cleaners and household glass cleaners contain one or more of these AR-coating killers:

  • Alcohol (isopropyl, ethanol) — Dissolves the bonding layer between the AR coating and the lens substrate. Repeated use causes "crazing" — fine cracks that look like spider-webbing.
  • Ammonia — Strips the hydrophobic top layer of multi-layer AR coatings, leaving the lens cloudy and water-spot prone.
  • Bleach or chlorine — Yellows AR coatings within weeks. Common in "antibacterial" wipes.
  • Acetone — Found in some nail polish remover and "fast-drying" cleaners. Destroys AR coatings on contact.
  • Vinegar — A common DIY recommendation that's actually acidic enough to etch oleophobic top coatings over time.

The lens manufacturers know this. Crizal's official care guide warns against alcohol-based cleaners. Hoya, Nikon, and ZEISS publish identical warnings. But most lens cleaners on the market don't list ingredients clearly, and the few that do use alcohol or ammonia anyway because they evaporate quickly and "feel" effective.

What Makes Z Clear Different

Z Clear started in 2019 with a single goal: a lens cleaner that wouldn't damage the coatings on the glasses we paid hundreds of dollars for. The formula is:

  • Alcohol-free, ammonia-free, bleach-free, acetone-free. No exceptions.
  • pH-neutral — won't etch oleophobic, hydrophobic, or oleo-/hydrophilic coatings.
  • Anti-static — repels dust between cleanings, so you clean less often.
  • Anti-fog — adds a fog-resistant layer that lasts 8–12 hours per application.
  • USA-made in Utah, in small batches, with full ingredient disclosure on every label.

It's safe on every lens we've tested it on, including:

  • Anti-reflective (AR) coated prescription lenses (Crizal, ZEISS DuraVision, Hoya HiVision, etc.)
  • Polarized sunglasses (Maui Jim, Costa, Smith, Oakley)
  • Photochromic / Transitions lenses
  • Polycarbonate sport and safety lenses
  • Trivex prescription lenses
  • Camera lenses (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Leica) — the same AR coatings live on photographic glass
  • Smartphone and laptop screens
  • Ski, snow, swim, and dive goggle lenses
  • Motorcycle helmet visors and shields

Three Z Clear Formats — Pick the One That Fits Your Lens

For Daily Use on Prescription Glasses & Sunglasses

The 1oz Spritz + Microfiber Cloth is our most popular pick for AR-coated prescription glasses. The 1oz bottle fits in a desk drawer, glove box, or backpack pocket. Spray, buff with the included microfiber cloth, and your lenses are clean and fog-resistant for the rest of the day.

For larger prescription frames or shared family use, step up to the 2oz Spritz + Microfiber Towel — same formula, larger bottle, larger included towel.

For Travel, Diving, and No-Spill Storage

Z Clear Anti-Fog Paste is the format we recommend if you fly often, travel for work, or pack a kit for the dive boat. The paste is concentrated — one jar lasts roughly 300 applications — and won't leak in checked baggage. It also has a mild scratch-filling effect that smooths minor surface scratches as you buff. Completely AR-coating safe.

For On-the-Go Cleaning

Z Clear Disposable Lens Wipes (15ct) are pre-moistened wet/dry pairs in pocket-sized foil pouches. Same alcohol-free formula in a single-use format. Perfect for travel kits, the office, the gym bag, or the kitchen drawer where you want a fast, no-mess clean. Also available in 50-count packs.

The Right Way to Clean AR-Coated Lenses

Even with a coating-safe cleaner, technique matters. Here's the sequence that protects your AR coating:

  1. Rinse first under cool water if the lenses are dusty. Dust is abrasive — wiping it dry will scratch the coating.
  2. Apply a small amount of Z Clear — one or two spritzes of liquid, or a pea-size amount of paste rubbed in between fingertips before applying.
  3. Buff in concentric circles with a clean microfiber cloth. Avoid paper towels, t-shirt fabric, and tissues — all of these are abrasive at the microscopic level.
  4. Inspect under light. If you see streaks, buff with a fresh corner of the microfiber cloth — not more cleaner.
  5. Wash your microfiber cloth weekly in cold water with a tiny amount of dish soap. Air dry. Never use fabric softener — it leaves a film.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Z Clear safe for Crizal AR coatings?

Yes. Z Clear is alcohol-free and pH-neutral, which meets Essilor's care guidance for Crizal Easy, Crizal Sapphire HR, and Crizal Forte UV.

Does Z Clear work on camera lens AR coatings?

Yes. Camera lens elements use the same multi-layer AR coatings as prescription glasses. Z Clear is a safer choice than alcohol-based "lens pens" or pre-moistened wipes that contain isopropyl alcohol.

How long does Z Clear's anti-fog last on AR-coated lenses?

Typically 8–12 hours per application, depending on humidity, temperature swings, and how often the lenses are wiped. The paste tends to last slightly longer than the spray.

Will Z Clear damage polarized or photochromic lenses?

No. Z Clear is safe for polarized films (Maui Jim, Costa) and photochromic lenses (Transitions). The formula is also safe on tinted, mirrored, and gradient lenses.
